Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Medical Toll Program
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel ((CBBT) Commission has chosen ESRHS to administer their medical toll pass program. This provides CBBT
tickets to Eastern Shore residents traveling across the Bay for medical appointments. It is an income based program, but special cases are approved on a "hardship" basis by the program coordinator, Debbie Davis. You do not have to be an ESRHS patient to qualify for this program, however if you have Medicaid, you will need to contact the Health Department for your tickets. Tickets can be obtained from any ESRHS center.
If you have further questions, please contact Debbie at 757-414-0400 or ddavis@esrh.org. The application is available on the Forms section of our website.
Foreign Travel
Travel to exotic locations around the world is now commonplace.
Should you seek medical advice from a foreign travel medical
expert before planning an international trip? The Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) reports that for every 100,000 persons traveling
overseas: (1) 50,000 of these people will develop some medical
problem, (2) 5,000 will become ill enough to need bed rest, (3)
300 will be admitted to a hospital, (4) 50 will require an emergency
evacuation by air for a serious illness, and (5) one person will die as
a consequence of illness complications.
Many of these illnesses
are preventable either through immunizations or preventive medications.
A pre-departure consultation with a
foreign travel medical expert needs to be
done at least four weeks prior to travel,
as some vaccines require a month to
provide full protection from the specific
disease.
Eastern Shore Rural Health Systems offers a foreign
travel clinical service where prospective travelers
can receive counseling on common illnesses such as Traveler’s diarrhea and immunizations
recommended for travel to their
destination. This service is
offered on Tuesdays from 10
am to 2 pm at the Franktown
Community Health Center.
Please call Sandy Heflin at
757-414-0400 ext. 125 to
schedule an appointment.
Health Education
ESRHS offers health education as a free service to all of our patients. Each center has a health educator who would be happy to talk with you about your asthma, diabetes, weight loss, smoking cessation and more. Our health educators can also provide seminars for businesses. Please contact Wanda Custis, Health Education Coordinator at 757-442-4819 ext. 325 or wcustis@esrh.org for more information.
Pharmacy Assistance
Pharmacy Assistance is offered at all ESRHS Centers. Pharmacy Assistance helps patients who are unable to pay for their routine, maintenance medications such as blood pressure medication. Prescriptions can cost as little as $4.25 for a 3 month supply of medicine.
To see if you qualify, call the Medication Assistance Caseworker, or Pharmacy Assistant at your center to schedule an appointment. Please bring proof of income (Federal 1040 tax forms and/or salary/paycheck stubs) and recent tax forms to this appointment. You must be an ESRHS patient to qualify for this program. The approval process could take up to 10 weeks. Refills should be ordered 6-8 weeks in advance.
For more information, including the Medication Assistance Caseworker for each center and their contact information, download our Pharmacy Assistance Brochure.
Reach Out and Read (ROR)
Children who are read to in the first years of life are much more likely to learn to read on schedule. Reach Out and Read is a national, non-profit organization founded in 1989 at Boston City Hospital. ESRHS doctors and nurses encourage parents to read aloud to their young children and offer age-appropriate tips. Every child between the ages of 6 months and five years who is coming in for a well-child visit is given a new, developmentally appropriate children's book to take home and keep. For more information, please call Wanda Custis at 757-442-4819 ext. 325 or email wcustis@esrh.org.
Safe Kids Coalition
The Eastern Shore Safe Kids Coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional injuries to children ages 0-14. The Eastern Shore coalition was established in 1989 by Eastern Shore Rural Health System, Inc. as the lead organization, and consists of over 30 members representing local organizations that are working together to combat the #1 killer of our children - preventable injuries!
